WUKF Senior & Veterans Championships 2012

Sunday Finals Day:

This started at it's usual early hour and Karate England had two finalist in Garrick Eastwood and John Anderson, in the -60kilos and -80kilos respectively.

Garrick was up first against a very good Ukranian producing a great contest with Garrick giving as good as he got but lost out 2-5 to take silver medal, his Ukranian opponent went on to win the "best of the best" with some outstanding performances againt his heavier opponents.

John Anderson was up against fellow country man Francis Barham from EWSKA, this was a very tight contest with Francis gaining a 2-0 advantage before John pulled back to 2-2 to take it into sudden death. Here John's greater experience and a very good gyaku-zuki gave him the gold medal and European title.

Along with all individual medal winners presented today our Male kumite team of John Anderson, Leon Martin, Phil Patrick and Jason Marquis and the Female team kumite of Ashley Obgekene, Shauna Carroll, Kerry McCormack and Lindsey Turnbull received their bronze medals in both the Sanbon and Rotation team categories. With two bronzes medal each team this shows that our Karate England squad are definitely one of the strongest squads within the main competition that of the Senior Kumite.

Saturday Competition:

Scheduled today were all team kata, Ippon team and Sanbon team kumite plus the individual Ippon and sanbon categories.

The day started well with both male and female sanbon teams taking a bronze, this was followed up by further bronze medals from Lindsey Turnbull and Phil Patrick.

Later in the day things became even more interesting when Garrick Eastwood and John Anderson both produced outstanding performances to make tomorrows finals.

Friday Competition:

Scheduled today were all kata events, veterans kumite and team rotations Ippon and Sanbon rotation.

Female veteran Patience Kakitie earned a well deserved bronze, both male and female kumite teams sanbon rotation took third place each in two very hottly contested sections. The female team of Shauna Carroll, Ashley Obgekene, Kerry McCormack and Lindsey turnbull lost 3-4 to the Romanians in a contentious semi-final. The male team of Leon Martin, John Anderson Jnr, Jason Marquis and Phil Patrick also lost to the Romanians 6-9 but it could have gone either way.

In the male veterans kata Dave Brashaw took a silver medal but Dean Tilley went one better in the veterans kumite winning a gold and a European title 6-1 in the final and we won't here the last of it.

Saturday it's the turn of the senior competitors.

Registration Day:

Everyone present and accounted for despite a few late arrivals, over 400 athletes, 22 countries from 39 different federations. A pretty good turnout.

Weather is a bit cool but forcast is dry.

Opening Ceremony:

A classic Scottish welcome with traditional dancers and bag pipes, draw sheets are on the WUKF website if anyone is interested. We will let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Signing off.
